THE BRIEF
This project explores the use of narrative, motifs and pattern making to explain the use of science to alter natural resources to mimic plastic with hopes to achieve sustainability, through repeat patterns.
CONCEPT
Bioplastics and nanofibers are a new type of fibre that commonly use natural bio-masses as the foundation, these can include shrimp, wood, corn, and many more. Humans have depended on plastic for many years for a variety of uses, especially for packing products. However, as the use of plastic grows, damage to the earth has become more evident. Therefore, science is used to recreate plastic in an eco-friendlier manner using renewable resources. Humans have learnt from the negative effects of plastic and are covering this with a better version of plastic.

Narrative
These patterns tell the narrative of the process of altering  nature with science to create more sustainable plastic gradually. The first artwork reflects nature affected by plastic; in other words, the problem science must solve. The second artwork communicates the procedure of taking natural resources and altering them in a lab. The third artwork portrays the product, a more sustainable plastic for the environment. The process of making bioplastics and nanofibers involves an extensive use of science and shows how humans are always finding and solving problems, therefore this gradual storying telling has been done to highlight this extensive development.

Motifs
To produce these pattern techniques of stamping and stenciling are used with acrylic paint to create the backgrounds and motifs. Stamping materials such as plastic bags, cups, bubble wrap, foam, sponges, and leaves emphasize the abundance of plastic and nature in our daily lives. Illustration with pens and markers are utilized for science motifs to replicate a textbook and study book.

The first pattern contains motifs such as plastic texture, bubble wrap, and sea life that are affected by plastic such as sea turtles, whales, fish, crab and sea birds. Motifs of petri dish textures, test tubes measurements, DNA structure, and leaves will be used to represent a science lab experimenting with natural resources under a microscope in pattern two. The third pattern will contain symbols such as plastic, leaves, and plastic cups to portray a sustainable alternative to plastic.

Colour
The colour palette consists of black, blue, green, and red. A black plastic background with animals in red will be used, the red symbolizes a damaged animal. The background shows through the red revealing plastic inside the animal. The second pattern has a blue background that represents fibres under a microscope and petri dishes, this is paired with nature and science motifs to duplicate diagrams in a book. The blue also symbolizes wisdom. A green plastic background with leaves in black is applied for the third pattern, and represents sustainability. The colour black is used to connect the artworks together.
